BCB clarify the "ICC Trophy 1997" issue
2013-03-20
Reports in the national media regarding the whereabouts of the ICC Trophy, which was won by Bangladesh in 1997, has come to the attention of the BCB. We feel some of the content in these reports have been based on misinformation and assumption.
In order to clear any confusion in this regard the BCB wishes to state that the original ICC Trophy is currently in a display cabinet at the International Cricket Council (ICC) offices in Dubai, UAE. This has been confirmed by the ICC.
BCB Acting CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury said: “As the tournament took place almost 16 years ago therefore we cross-checked with the ICC and have been informed that during the period when the event was a regular feature for ICC Associate Member countries the winners were at times permitted to take the trophy back home for a couple of months for photographic and promotional opportunities. However there was never any provision of handing over the original trophy or its replica to the champions. “
”Since this concerns one of Bangladesh’s greatest achievements in the pre-Test era therefore we have spoken to players and officials of the 1997 ICC Trophy winning squad and related officials working for the Board at that time. Based on the information it is evident that the original trophy or a replica never arrived in Bangladesh.”
