Quotes of Brian Lara who was unveiled as Chittagong Kings Brand Ambassador for the second edition of the Bangladesh Premier League on Thursday, January 17, 2013
Why he is on BPL
I love the adventure of the franchise team. It takes over the control the cricket boards have over the game. First of all, it creates a lot of opportunities for young players. Hopefully cricketers will emerge from the grass-roots level. In the Caribbean we found it difficult to encourage teenagers to take up the game. We are now launching our own domestic T20 competition. We will try to seek youngsters in the Caribbean.
What is the impact of Twenty20 cricket
I believe now with T20 cricket, a lot more people are watching the game. Just remember, we are all entertainers. And if this kind of cricket brings interest to the people, cricketers will be happy to indulge in it. Test cricket is still important, so are ODIs but T20 should be there too because of the crowd factor.
On Sachin’s retirement
I think he (Sachin) should decide for himself. It is a decision that we all have to respect. And I’m sure he wants to end on a high. I believe it rests on him. He has not been playing T20 for quite a while and now he is gone from ODIs. Maybe five days of concentration in test cricket will give him the impetus to do well. He knows the end is just around the corner. But I believe he would want to end on a high.
What is his role today in Kings.
I have been away from the game for six years now. My job now will be to act as a guide to the younger players.I want Bangladesh cricket to do a lot better. Obviously they will improve more. Then, you will see a lot more international players playing in your domestic leagues. My understanding of the Bangladesh team is that they are heading in the right direction.
Will records made to be broken
You look at Warner from Australia, Gayle and Sehwag. They are strong players in the T20 format. They bring a lot more excitement. You look at Warner bat in a test match. He can easily score 150 before tea. That’s what people want to see. And I think the effect will be a positive one. What I think is that the bowlers are pulling away from test cricket probably due to the amount of work. The money on offer in T20 cricket is an attractive proposition for players. You’ll find a lot more players making themselves available for T20s. But all in all I think test cricket is still very strong. This kind of competition (BPL) will make cricket more exciting I believe. Both can go on simultaneously I think.
